dealing dogs

i just watched the most heartbreaking documentary on hbo called dealing dogs. the group last chance for animals had an investigator go undercover into a huge dog kennel in arkansas. they take in dogs, completely mistreat them and sell them off to research labs. they would use almost any excuse to kill a dog, including upsetting a dog enough to try to bite them. (which is the part of the movie i actually cried during, this complete ass of a man pushed this sweet dog down to the ground, so the dog tried to bite him, well the guy used biting as an excuse to kill it. they showed him get a gun and shoot the dog twice in the head, it was truly horrible.) apparently a lot of the dogs were actually stolen pets from around the state. these guys would steal dogs and sell them to this kennel for $10 - $20 and the kennel would turn around and sell the dogs to research labs for around $250. if a dog had heartworm, they would kill the dog, rip out its heart and sell the heartworms to research labs for lots of money too :(
the good news was after years and years of investigation and working through the federal system, the family that owned the kennel lost their licenses permanently, their land, their homes, paid >$250,000 in fines. the main owner is now up against charges that could put him in jail for 10 years and a million dollars in fines. the animals that were at the kennel when it was finally shut down all found new homes.
